This is a recycling station - disguised as an arcade machine. It calls on people to vote on a trivial argument with emptied liquid containers. Please check out our demo below.
The goal of this project is to encourage active recycling by engaging people in self-motivated interactions. Why did we do that?
The Problems of Recycling
As much as we see the benefits of recycling, it's sometimes hard to make commitments. We noticed an interesting phenomenon by observing many locations: the mixed trash cans always get filled faster than recycling bins, even when they are positioned side by side.
Design an Engaging Interaction
To encourage people to take action, we designed an interactive installation that activate a competition on trivial arguments. The left and right side of the arcade stands for two sides of a topic. People can use recyclable containers as voting tokens if they want to voice for their side.
How Does It Work ?
Inside the arcade, we have 3 bins that separate aluminum, plastic, and liquid waste. An Arduino board controls the circuit that detects an input and provides visual and audio feedback.
The sensors in our arcade are able to count the number of votes and detect the material of the containers (aluminum or plastic). It then provides different audio and visual feedback to let users know whether they have recycled correctly.
